Mango Cream Cheese Buttercream Frosting
There is just something about mango that instantly makes everything feel brighter, lighter, and a little more special. Every spring, as I start working citrus and tropical flavors back into my baking lineup here at Lady Behind the Curtain, I find myself reaching for mango again and again. It has that naturally sweet, slightly tangy flavor that pairs beautifully with cakes, cupcakes, cookies, and even sandwich cookies.

That is exactly why I created this Mango Cream Cheese Buttercream Frosting. It delivers a true mango flavor without sacrificing the creamy, stable texture you expect from a classic cream cheese frosting. The secret ingredient to getting the perfect amount of mango flavor is LorAnn Oils Mango Flavoring. A small amount goes a long way, giving you that bright mango taste without adding extra liquid that could ruin the consistency of your frosting.
This frosting is smooth, pipeable, lightly tangy from the cream cheese, and filled with sunny mango flavor that tastes amazing on vanilla cake, coconut cupcakes, lemon layers, or even chocolate cake for a tropical twist.
What Makes This Frosting Special
Cream cheese buttercream already has that slightly tangy richness that balances sweet desserts beautifully. When you add mango to the mix, it creates a frosting that feels both indulgent and refreshing.

With mango flavoring, you get:
A bold, concentrated mango taste
A stable buttercream texture
A frosting that holds its shape when piped
Consistent results every time
No watering down from fruit puree
This makes it ideal for decorating cupcakes for parties, frosting layer cakes, or creating decorative swirls for your Cupcake of the Month feature as we head into spring and summer.
Tips and Tricks for Perfect Mango Cream Cheese Buttercream

USE ROOM TEMPERATURE: Start with softened but cool cream cheese. If your cream cheese is too warm, your frosting may become loose before you even begin mixing. Also, room temperature butter. This helps create a smooth, lump-free base that blends easily with the cream cheese.
MANGO FLAVORING: Add the mango flavoring gradually. The flavor is concentrated, so start small and increase until you reach your preferred level of mango taste.
POWDERED SUGAR: Sift your powdered sugar before mixing. This will help you avoid lumps and create a silky smooth finish. NOTE: I never do this, but it will help with a silky frosting.
FOR A SILING FROSTING: Beat on low once the sugar has been added. Overmixing at high speed can introduce too much air, creating bubbles in your frosting. NOTE: Again, I don’t do this. I beat for 3 minutes. I like the light, airy texture.
WARM KITCHEN: Chill briefly if needed. If your kitchen is warm, a short rest in the refrigerator can help the frosting firm up before piping.
PAIRING IDEAS: This frosting pairs well with coconut cupcakes, vanilla bean cake, lemon cake, or even sandwich cookies for a tropical dessert that feels bakery-quality.

Recipe Variations

FIESTA FROSTING: Add lime zest for a mango-lime frosting that pairs beautifully with coconut cake.
COCONUT: Mix in toasted coconut for texture and a more tropical flavor combination.
VANILLA: Blend in a touch of vanilla bean paste to mellow the mango and create a softer fruit note.
PEACH: Add a small amount of peach flavoring with the mango for a mango-peach variation that pairs well with vanilla cupcakes.
PINEAPPLE: For a deeper tropical profile, try adding a hint of pineapple flavoring along with the mango.
VIBRANT COLOR: Use a small amount of gel food coloring to enhance the natural pastel yellow color for themed desserts or party cupcakes.
LAYERED CAKE: For a summer-inspired layer cake, pair this frosting with lemon cake layers and a thin spread of mango jam between each layer.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Can I use fresh mango instead of mango flavoring? Yes, but fresh mango puree contains a lot of natural moisture, which can thin out your frosting and make it difficult to pipe. Using LorAnn Mango Flavoring gives you strong mango flavor without changing the texture of the buttercream.
- Will this frosting hold up for piping decorations? Yes. This Mango Cream Cheese Buttercream is firm enough to hold swirls, borders, and decorative piping when properly mixed.
- Can I make this frosting ahead of time? Absolutely. This frosting can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.
- Does this frosting need to be refrigerated? Yes. Because it contains cream cheese, it should be refrigerated if not being used immediately.
- Can I freeze Mango Cream Cheese Buttercream Frosting? Yes. This frosting freezes well when stored in an airtight container for later use.
- How do I fix frosting that is too soft? Try chilling the frosting in the refrigerator for about 20 to 30 minutes, or mix in a small amount of additional powdered sugar.
- How do I fix frosting that is too thick? Add a small splash of milk or mango juice and mix on low speed until you reach your desired consistency.
- Can I color this frosting? Yes. Gel food coloring works best and will not thin the frosting’s consistency.
- Is this frosting overly sweet? No. The tang from the cream cheese helps balance the sweetness of the powdered sugar.
- Can I use this frosting for a layer cake? Yes. It works beautifully for filling and frosting layer cakes.
- Can I use this frosting on cookies? Yes. It can be spread onto sugar cookies or used as a filling for sandwich cookies.
