STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE DECORATED PRETZELS INGREDIENTS LIST- full printable recipe below in recipe card
- 1 (10-ounce) bag Ghirardelli white vanilla melting wafers
- 1/3 cup dry pound cake mix
- 1 (1-ounce) bag freeze-dried strawberries, ground
- 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
- 15 pretzel rods
- optional ¼ teaspoon LorAnn Cake Batter Flavor Oil, red melting wafers, red and pink sprinkles
EASY TO MAKE STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE PRETZEL RODS INSTRUCTIONS
HOW TO GRIND FREEZE-DRIED STRAWBERRIES
- Pour the bag of freeze-dried strawberries into a blender ( I used an immersion blender). Pulse until the strawberries become a fine powder.
HOW TO MAKE STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE PRETZEL RODS:
- Add the melting wafers and shortening to a medium-sized microwave-safe bowl. Heat 1 minute. Stir until melted and creamy. If the melting wafers are not completely melted, heat for an additional 15 seconds.
- Add the pound cake mix to the melted candy and stir until combined.
- Stir in the strawberry powder and, optionally, the cake batter oil flavoring. NOTE: The candy mixture will be thick like cake batter.
- HEAT FOR AN ADDITIONAL 30 SECONDS. Stir until everything is combined.
- Dip or Spoon over pretzel rods, place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Set aside on the counter to harden for a faster result, or place in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
FOR THE RED DRIZZLE:
- Pour candy wafers into a medium microwave-safe bowl, heat for 1 minute, and stir until melted and creamy.
- Pour the melted candy into a small zip-top bag, a piping bag, or a squeeze bottle.
- Drizzle red melted candy over pretzel rods in a back-and-forth motion. While the candy is still wet, add the sprinkles.
TIP FOR A MESS-FREE DRIZZLE
Drizzling the tops of your dipped pretzels is an easy way to dress up your decorated pretzels. However, it can be tiresome to remove all the bits left behind. THE SOLUTION? After the drizzle and sprinkles are added to the pretzel, and while the candy is still wet, lift the pretzel straight up and transfer to a clean piece of parchment paper to harden.

TAKING CARE OF THE CANDY PUDDLE
There’s an easy solution to the ugly candy puddle. Use a microplane to gently sand it off. This will create a nice, clean, beautiful edge.

What do I do With The Leftover Pound Cake Mix?
Because only ¼ cups of the cake mix were used, you can still make a cake with the leftover mix. Follow the ingredient list on the back (eggs, oil, water) and bake as instructed.
How Many Pretzels Can I Decorate in Advance?

One of the best things about decorated pretzels (aside from the taste) is the convenience of making them before your party. It’s every hostess’s dream to be able to create something this tasty before the craziness of the party prep starts. Ultimately, taking some of the stress away from hosting a party. These adorable pretzels can be made up to a week in advance of the party.
HOW TO STORE LEFTOVER MELTED CANDY

If you have melted too much candy for your project, don’t worry; melted candy can be stored for future use. STORAGE: Pour the melted candy into a zip-top bag, remove all the air from the bag, zip it closed, and set it aside until hardened. OR….Place a piece of parchment paper on the counter, pour the leftover candy onto the paper, and let it harden before breaking it into manageable pieces. Then, place the pieces into a zip-top bag. USE AGAIN: Pull the hardened candy out of the bag, chop, put it in a microwave-safe bowl, heat for 30 seconds, stir, and continue heating in 30-second intervals until the candy is melted and creamy. NOTE: Reheated candy melts faster than the first time it was melted.
HOW TO STORE DECORATED PRETZELS
The easiest way to store decorated pretzels is in an airtight container at room temperature. Provided everything is fresh to begin with, and the container is clean, dry, and has a tight seal, partially covered pretzel rods can stay fresh for about 2 weeks, sometimes even longer.
Using a Spoon vs. a Piping Bag: Which Technique Is Better for Coating Pretzels?

Both methods of coating pretzels have some pros and cons, but neither is better than the other.
- USING A BOWL AND A SPOON: The coating mix is melted in the bowl that is also used to coat the pretzel. Let the spoon be your guide. Start at the end of the pretzel the guests will be holding, and use the melted candy to mark how close to the end you want the candy to be. TIP: Leave enough room for your guest to hold the pretzel without candy. If you coat the whole pretzel, your guests will have messy hands. The heat of their fingers will melt the candy. Continue coating the pretzel on the opposite end. Tap the side of the bowl to release any excess candy coating, and place it on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper to harden.
- USING A PIPING BAG FITTED INTO A TALL GLASS: While I love this method, it requires the same clean-up as the bowl and spoon method. The only real difference I noticed is that the candy stayed warm for longer. Otherwise, the candy must be heated in a bowl and then transferred to a tall glass/cup, lined with a piping bag.
