Don’t toss those broken pretzel rods—turn them into something magical! These whimsical birthday candle pretzel sticks are the perfect way to give new life to snack-time mishaps and add a playful, edible twist to your party favors. With a little candy coating, cake mix added to the melted candy, colorful decorations, and a wick that lights up, these mini pretzel candles are just as charming as they are delicious.
Whether tucked into treat bags or perched on top of cupcakes, they’ll add a festive sparkle to any celebration—and no one will ever guess they started as broken bits!

Digging through the bags of pretzels to find the one with the fewest broken pretzels is always a challenge. If you’ve ever decorated pretzel rods, then you know what I’m talking about. Recently, I purchased a container online. I had bought this brand before and had good luck with the broken-to-not-broken ratio. This wasn’t just any brand; it was my favorite pretzel rod brand, UTZ.
Why are they my favorite? Most of the pretzels are straight, and there is a definite bottom. If you know, you know. Snyders is always curved, and there is no bottom. Anyway, back to the broken pretzel rods. I received a tub of broken rods! Don’t worry, I got a full refund, but I still had a tub of broken pretzels. In comes the idea of making birthday candle pretzels and realizing these small rods are the perfect size for little hands.

Stir ¼ cup of boxed cake mix into melted candy coating to infuse the sweet birthday cake flavor directly into the colorful “wax” of your edible candles. Dip the broken pretzel pieces in the cake-infused candy coating, decorate with sprinkles, and top them off with a real wick.

- Sharp serrated knife
- Microplainer
BROKEN PRETZEL RODS INSTRUCTIONS

- Dig through the broken pretzels and choose the ones you want to use. I chose pretzels that still had the ends on them, but this technique will work with any pieces.
- Now decide on the size of your candles (mine are about 3¼ inches after being cut and sawed).
- Cut the broken end about ¼-inch longer than the finished size. Use a sharp serrated knife. NOTE: The end will break off unevenly. This is when the microplainer comes into play.
- Gently saw the cut end of the pretzel until a flat surface is reached and the desired length is achieved. Now you’re ready to decorate. NOTE: The sanded edge will be the top of the candle.
NO CANDLE WICKS? HERE’S SOME ALTERNATIVE IDEAS

Most people don’t have candle wicks lying around. If you do that, that’s great! A cost-effective alternative is to buy candles from Dollar Tree, melt them, and reuse the wicks. OR….CUT ONE INCH OFF THE TOP OF A BIRTHDAY CANDLE. Use melted candy to adhere it to the pretzel. Below are a few edible options. But…..I recommend using a real wick or a cut-off birthday candle.????????️
- Black licorice lace — For an already lit look, use thin strands that look just like a wick and are entirely edible.
- Chocolate string — Pipe a thin line of white chocolate or white melting wafers for unlit and yellow for lit.
- Thin white fondant rope — Roll out a tiny bit of black fondant into a thin string to place on top.
- Thin pretzel stick — Break off a tiny bit of pretzel stick and color it with melted yellow or white candy for a crunchy wick option.
- Piped royal icing — Use a white or yellow royal icing to pipe a realistic wick shape directly on top of the “candle.”
- Tootsie Roll string — Soften a Tootsie Roll and roll it into a tiny black string for a chewy, chocolate-flavored wick.
Add Another Pop Of Flavor

It only takes 1/8 of a teaspoon per color to bring out the cake batter flavor with the addition of LorAnn Oils Cake Batter Flavor.

DECORATED PRETZELS FAQ’s

To complete the underwater theme of your party, consider styling the decorated pretzels in a bucket of edible sand. Not only will this enhance the overall look of your snack table, but it will also add an extra element of fun and creativity to your event. Combining the under-the-sea pretzel rods with the realistic edible sand will transport your guests to an oceanic paradise, creating a truly memorable experience. Make sure to provide small shovels or spoons for your guests to dig into the sand and enjoy the delicious pretzel rods. Your party will be a hit with this unique and visually appealing snack presentation that will leave everyone talking long after the event.
One of the best things about decorated pretzels (aside from the taste) is the convenience of making them before your party. It’s every hostess’s dream to be able to create something this tasty before the craziness of the party prep starts. Ultimately, taking some of the stress away from hosting a party. These adorable pretzels can be made as early as a week before the party.
The easiest way to store decorated pretzels is in an airtight container at room temperature. Provided everything is fresh to begin with and the container is clean, dry, and has a tight seal, partially covered pretzel rods can stay fresh for about 2 weeks, sometimes even longer.
If you have melted too much candy for your project, don’t worry; melted candy can be stored to use again. STORAGE: Pour melted candy into a zip-top bag, let all the air out of the bag, zip it closed, and set it out until hardened. OR….Place a piece of parchment paper on the counter, pour leftover candy onto the paper, let the candy harden before breaking it into manageable pieces, and place it into a zip-top bag. USE AGAIN: Pull the hardened candy out of the bag, chop, put in a microwave-safe bowl, heat for 30 seconds, stir, and continue heating in 30-second intervals until the candy is melted and creamy. NOTE: Reheated candy melts will heat faster than the first time they were melted.
