How to Make a Cake Roll | This popular dessert is viewed by most people as something desirable to look at but way too complicated to actually make! NOT ANY LONGER! I am here to show you how easy this show stopper is to make! And if the photos aren’t enough I’ve also included a “How to” video!
Not only is this dessert easy to make but it can also be made weeks in advance! What more could you ask for in a dessert? Simply the BEST thing EVER!
Step One: Line a 16x12x1-inch baking pan with parchment paper. First spray the pan with non stick cooking spray, lay the piece of parchment on top and spray the paper.
Step Two: If the recipe calls for you to whip the egg yolks (most of them do) make sure to whip them on high until they are thick and a light lemon color (about 4 minutes) before you add the sugar.
Step Three: If your recipe calls for you to whip the egg whites (most of them do). Whip them to a soft peak (curls on itself) add sugar and then whip to a stiff peak (stands up).
Step Four: Cut in the egg yolks into the egg whites (no whisking).
Step Five: Use a sieve and sprinkle the flour mixture over egg mixture. Use the same cutting in method you used for the egg yolks.
Step Six: Pour batter into prepared pan and bake for 12 to 15 minutes.
Step Seven: While cake is baking prepare your kitchen towel. Sprinkle the whole towel with confectioners’ sugar.
Step Eight: When cake comes out of the oven run an off set spatula around the edges. Let cool on a cooling rack 5 minutes.
Step Nine: Turn cake out onto prepared kitchen towel.
Step Ten: Fold end of towel on top of cake; roll up cake AND towel. Set on cooling rack until cake is completely cooled.
Step Eleven: Unroll cake; evenly spread on filling withing 1/2-inch from edges. Roll cake back up (WITH OUT TOWEL) starting with the original end that was rolled in the towel (the end that is curled).
Step Twelve: This step is up to you. You can either set the cake in the refrigerator for a couple of hours so that the filling can sit before slicing or wrap the cake up in plastic wrap and foil, label it and place in freezer until ready to use.
