Plastic Wrap Method
Disclaimer: I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL BAKER….I am 100% self taught.
Using plastic wrap instead of a piping bag for frosting is popping up everywhere. I was curious, so I gave it a try. It’s a lot easier then it looks and is the PERFECT method for rainbow party themes. The trick to this frosting is getting the colors in the right order. Since they are all together in one bag, picking out the right colors to be next to each other is super important. A muddy colored frosting could be the result of not choosing correctly.
Colors of Frosting:
The colors chosen were yellow, blue and red….repeat. The result is…yellow touches blue which creates green. So now you have yellow, green and blue. Add red to the mix and the result is….red touches blue which creates purple and red also touches yellow which created orange. Now you have yellow, green, blue, purple, red and orange.
Separate frosting into three bowls, add gel food coloring to each (I used lemon yellow, sky blue and super red). Spoon colored frosting into three small 12 inch piping bags or zip top bags. Lay out a piece of plastic wrap 16 inches long. Pipe each color the length of the plastic wrap (I only added one row of each color, I think piping multiple rows would work better). Roll like a cinnamon roll and twist the ends. Snip one end. Insert the snipped end of the frosting filled plastic wrapped frosting into a large (18 inch) piping bag fitted with a wide mouth tip (I used #829 tip)
3 (12-inch) Piping Bag Method
This method is amazing and allows you to customize your frosting to match your party color scheme. Since each color is in its own piping bag you don’t have to worry about the colors touching and creating a muddy effect. Divide frosting into three bowls. Add get food coloring to each bowl. Make sure you stir until all the frosting has been colored (scrape the bottom and bring it to the top). Spoon frosting into a 12 inch piping bag. You may only need half the frosting so be prepared to make two piping bags of the frosting. Don’t over fill the piping bag. A good way to test whether or not the bags are over filled is to press the frosting flat in the bag. If it won’t go flat then the bag is over loaded. This helps make the loading of the bags into the large piping bag a lot easier. Snip the end of each bag (about 1½ inches from the tip). Pinch the end so the frosting doesn’t come out while pressing the bag flat. Fit a large piping bag (18 inches) with a wide mouth piping tip (I used #849 tip). Slide the flat piping bags with frosting into the large piping bag. Press some of the frosting out until you see all three colors. Create your own color combo to fit any occasion or theme!
Two Color Swirl with Store Bought Frosting
Yes, you can create beautiful cupcakes with store bought products! DISCLAIMER: Store bought frosting is tender compared to homemade frosting so be gentle. Meaning don’t drive on a bumpy road..the frosting will vibrate off the cupcakes. YES! This happened to me just last week! TIP: To help the frosting stabilize add some powdered sugar.
Use one container of fluffy white frosting per color
From here, follow all the directions for the 3 piping bag method except change it to two.
When you’re in a pinch having a few cans of store bought frosting is the way to go!

I didn’t know about using two different bags. That is awesome!
I had never seen the technique using plastic wrap. I am going to try this with pastels to create tie dye effect. One question – how does the tip stay on the end of the rolled up plastic rwap?
