How to Make Under-the-Sea Themed Pretzel Rods
CREATING THE EDIBLE SAND

Creating edible sand is a fun and easy way to add a realistic beachy touch to your desserts. Start by finely grinding Nilla Wafers in a food processor to achieve a soft, golden sand-like texture. For added dimension and a more natural look, mix in a few ground Oreo cookies (with the filling removed) to create flecks of darker “sand.” TIP: YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE FILLING IF YOU USE OREO THINS. This combination enhances the visual appeal with subtle color variation and adds a delicious blend of flavors—sweet vanilla with a hint of chocolate. It’s perfect for decorating cakes, cupcakes, and themed treats like under-the-sea pretzel rods or beach-inspired parfaits.
- Nilla Wafers
- Oreo Cookie Thins
- Add the cookies (vanilla wafers and Oreo cookies) to a food processor bowl.
- Pulse until the cookies become finely ground with a few chunks.

OCEAN DECORATED PRETZEL RODS INGREDIENTS LIST -full printable recipe below in recipe card
- 1 (11 ounce) box of Nilla Wafers
- 3 ounces of Oreo Cookie Thins
- 1 (12-ounce) bag light blue melting wafers ( I used Melt Craft from Michaels)
- 20 pretzel rods
- blue petal dust (found at Michaels)
- ½ cup homemade edible sand
- mini fish sprinkles
- white nonperils
OCEAN INSPIRED DECORATED PRETZEL INSTRUCTIONS

- Add the blue candy to a medium microwave-safe bowl. Heat for 1 minute, stirring until the candy is melted and creamy. If the candy is not melted, continue heating in 15-second increments. NOTE: THE MELT CRAFT BRAND SHOULD ONLY TAKE ONE MINUTE. Be careful; you don’t want burnt candy.
- Place a piping bag in a tall cup/glass, and pour melted candy into the piping bag.
- Tilt the cup so the candy reaches almost to the top of the cup. Dip the pretzel into the candy, making sure the candy reaches your desired level at the end. NOTE: KEEP IN MIND THAT YOUR GUESTS WILL NEED ROOM FOR THEIR FINGERS TO HOLD THE PRETZEL. THIS TREAT SHOULD BE A MESS-FREE TREAT.
- Hold the pretzel over the melted candy with the top end pointing down, and swirl a few times to let the excess candy drip back into the melted candy. Use the side of the cup to scrape off some of the extra candy.
- Place the dipped pretzel on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. NOTE: AT THIS POINT YOU CAN FINISH THIS WAY….Continue with the remaining pretzel rods. Once all the rods are coated, place them in the refrigerator to harden (about 10 minutes). OR, WHILE THE CANDY IS STILL WET, ADD A SPRINKLE OF THE HOMEMADE EDIBLE SAND.
- WHY ARE THERE TWO DIFFERENT ENDINGS TO THESE PRETZELS? The first option allows you to paint the petal dust down the pretzel. The second option only allows for the portion not covered by the sand. I’ve made these pretzels using both methods, which work great. It’s just a matter of preference.
- Once the candy has hardened, tap a little bit of the blue dust into a small bowl, and use the paintbrush to dab the color onto the pretzel.
- Remove the piping bag from the cup, snip a small portion to make a small opening.
- Decide where you want to place the fish. Add a small dot of the melted candy to the pretzel where the fish will be placed. Press the fish into the melted candy. Wait a minute for the candy to harden.
- Add small swirls of the blue melted candy onto the pretzel above each fish (this will be where the bubbles are placed).
- While the candy is still wet, add the white non-peril sprinkles.
- IF YOU HAVEN’T YET: Using the same melted candy, pipe a strip over the bottom portion of each pretzel. Sprinkle with edible sand while the candy is still wet.
- Place decorated pretzels on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper to harden.
ADDING DIMENSION WITH PETAL DUST

To add dimension with petal dust, sprinkle a small amount into a small container/bowl and use a small clean paintbrush to paint patches of color onto the hardened melted candy, leaving open areas of the original blue color. The Petal dust will create a water effect, making your under-the-sea pretzel rods stand out. With the addition of petal dust, your under-the-sea pretzel rods will impress your guests and create a stunning visual display at your summer party.

How to Style the Decorated Pretzels
To complete the underwater theme of your party, consider styling the decorated pretzels in a bucket of edible sand. Not only will this enhance the overall look of your snack table, but it will also add an extra element of fun and creativity to your event. Combining the under-the-sea pretzel rods with the realistic edible sand will transport your guests to an oceanic paradise, creating a truly memorable experience. Make sure to provide small shovels or spoons for your guests to dig into the sand and enjoy the delicious pretzel rods. Your party will be a hit with this unique and visually appealing snack presentation that will leave everyone talking long after the event.
What’s the Earliest I Can Make Decorated Pretzels?
One of the best things about decorated pretzels (aside from the taste) is the convenience of making them before your party. It’s every hostess’s dream to be able to create something this tasty before the craziness of the party prep starts. Ultimately, taking some of the stress away from hosting a party. These adorable pretzels can be made as early as a week before the party.
How to Store Decorated Pretzels

The easiest way to store decorated pretzels is in an airtight container at room temperature. Provided everything is fresh to begin with and the container is clean, dry, and has a tight seal, partially covered pretzel rods can stay fresh for about 2 weeks, sometimes even longer.
How to Store Leftover Melted Candy

If you have melted too much candy for your project, don’t worry; melted candy can be stored to use again. STORAGE: Pour melted candy into a zip-top bag, let all the air out of the bag, zip it closed, and set it out until hardened. OR….Place a piece of parchment paper on the counter, pour leftover candy onto the paper, let the candy harden before breaking it into manageable pieces, and place it into a zip-top bag. USE AGAIN: Pull the hardened candy out of the bag, chop, put in a microwave-safe bowl, heat for 30 seconds, stir, and continue heating in 30-second intervals until the candy is melted and creamy. NOTE: Reheated candy melts will heat faster than the first time they were melted.

NOT ALL CANDY IS CREATED EQUAL – TOP CHOICES

My list is based on brands I can find locally. I have heard great things about popular candy-making brands on Amazon, specifically Merkens.
- GHIRARDELLI: I rate this melting candy the best. The candy melts beautifully and has excellent flavor.
- MELT CRAFT: The newest addition to Michaels, these candy wafers are the best brand they’ve carried. They have a decent flavor and melt beautifully.
- SWEET TOOTH FAIRY: No longer available at Michaels, these candy wafers were good and far better than Wilton Candy Melts, which they carried before this brand.
- GREAT VALUE: Cheap melting candy from Walmart.
- CHOC MAKER: Not bad, a step up for Candy Melts.
- CANDY MELTS: The melting process of Wilton candy melts is not consistent. Whether shortening is needed depends on the color, unlike Ghirardelli or Melt Craft, which don’t need any shortening added to be creamy.
- ALMOND BARK: Cheap but melts beautifully.
