Everyone loves a good pudding dessert and this Old Fashioned Southern Banana Pudding Dessert is just that. With layers of homemade vanilla custard, vanilla wafers, fresh banana slices and homemade whipped topping, this is the dessert you remember as a kid. DRESS IT UP
MAKE IT SEMI HOMEMADE
- 8 large egg yolks
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 4½ cups whole milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
- 1 (11 ounce) box vanilla wafers
- 6 medium bananas, sliced
- 1 recipe Sweet Vanilla Whip Cream (link below)
For the Pudding:
In a large bowl, whisk together egg yolks and sugar, set aside. In a large saucepan, add flour and salt. Whisk in milk and vanilla. Bring the milk mixture to a simmer over medium heat, whisking constantly. remove from heat, whisk 1 cup milk mixture into the egg mixture. Whisk the egg and milk mixture into the remaining hot milk.
Cook whisking constantly over medium heat, until mixture comes to a simmer. Cook, still whisking constantly until thickened (about 2-4 minutes). Remove from heat, whisk in the butter until melted.
In a 9x13-inch baking dish, layer half of the wafers, half of the banana slices and half of the pudding. Repeat layers once. Top with whip cream. Refrigerate 4 hours before serving.
