Semi Homemade Cola Barbecue Sauce | Make your burger stand out with homemade barbecue sauce! This sauce has a touch of sweetness from the cola with a hint of spice from the crushed red pepper flakes. It all starts with your favorite barbecue sauce as the base.
The flavor is up to you! I chose a savory sauce base. If sweet sauces are your thing then you can choose a sweet sauce base. It kind of depends on what the sauce is going to be put on. For a burger and pulled pork I like more of a spicy sauce but for barbecue beef I prefer a sweet sauce.
This sauce is great on any burger especially a WESTERN BACON CHEESEBURGER, RANCH BURGER or a STEAKHOUSE BURGER. If the perfect burger is what you’re looking for, visit my burger category. - 1/2 cup onion, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, chopped
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 cup barbecue sauce (I used Stubbs)
- 2/3 cup cola
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
In a medium saucepan sauté the onion and garlic in the oil until tender (about 5 minutes). Add to the onion mixture the barbecue sauce, cola, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice and pepper flakes. Stir to combine. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer *without a lid* 20 minutes occasionally stirring. Store in a jar with a tightly fitting lid in the refrigerator.
