How to Transform Store Bought Dough into Donuts
It's fun and easy to create your own freshly made donuts!
Ingredients
For the Donuts:
- vegetable oil
- 1 can of Pillsbury Original Crescent Rolls
- 1 can of Pillsbury Grands Biscuits (I like the Southern style)
- 1 can of Pillsbury Small Cinnamon Rolls (the kind that are not rolled)
For the Chocolate Icing:
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- ¼ cup cocoa powder
- 3 tablespoons milk
For the Maple Icing:
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons maple flavoring
- 1 tablespoon maple syrup
- 2 tablespoons milk
For the Cinnamon Sugar Topping:
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
Instructions
FRYING:
For the Crescent Roll Donuts:
- Pour oil into a dutch oven or large pot (about 2 inches).
- Heat oil to 350 -360 degrees.
TIP - Don't have a thermometer? Dip the end of a wooden spoon into the hot oil and if it bubbles then the oil is ready.
- Take crescent rolls out of the containers, roll as if they were going to be baked.
- Drop in hot oil only about 4 at a time.
- Fry until golden brown then flip over to the other side.
- Drain on paper towels.
NOTE - if rolling in cinnamon and sugar mixture do it while the donuts are still hot.
For the Biscuit Donuts:
- Take biscuits out of the containers; use a small round cutter (about 1-inch) to cut the center out.
- Fry the same as the Crescent Roll Donuts.
For the Cinnamon Roll Donuts:
- Take cinnamon rolls out of the containers; use the same small round cutter that was used for the biscuit donuts.
- Fry the same as the Crescent Roll and Biscuit donuts.
AIR-FRYER:
- Preheat air fryer to 350°.
- Spray with non stick cooking spray.
- Place four donuts at a time in the air-fryer basket.
- Fry (bake) 5-6 minutes.
- Let cool completely before adding icing or add cinnamon sugar while still hot. LOOK below for instructions.
For the Chocolate Icing:
- Mix all ingredients together until smooth.
- Dip the top of a cooled donut into the icing, place on a rack to harden (if adding a topping do so now before the icing can harden).
For the Maple Icing:
- Mix all ingredients together until smooth.
- Dip the top of a cooled donut into the icing, place on a rack to harden (if adding a topping do so now before the icing can harden).
For the Cinnamon Sugar Topping:
- In a small bowl stir together the sugar and cinnamon.
- Dip or brush the top of the donut in the melted butter and then in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
CINNAMON ROLL ICING: I coated most of the cinnamon roll donuts with the icing that came in the can. Remove the icing from the container that it came in into a small bowl, microwave about 10 seconds or until thinned out. Dip cooled cinnamon roll donuts into the icing.
